Why did you become an exorcist? To help people?

To save akuma, actually. Their souls are trapped and forced to kill.

[Nods] No one should be forced to do something so awful. I'm glad they have people like you to help them.

[Smiles at him and then her eyes move down to her tea thoughtfully.] Why don't Road and Tyki like you? Is it because you don't follow the Noah's instincts? Or because you're an exorcist?

Mostly because I'm an exorcist and I just won't die. [He laughs lightly, but then he gets just a little serious.] We're on opposite ends of a Holy war. The Church and the exorcists use Innocence to fight in order to destroy akuma and save humanity. The Earl and Noah control the akuma in order to destroy humanity. Obviously, there is some conflict between Noah and exorcists. But I cannot forgive the Earl or the Noah for the death and suffering of so many. I cannot allow people who want to destroy mankind win.

[Headquarters...his first true 'home', the home of his friends, was destroyed. Finders, scientists he knew...Tapp...all killed mercilessly.]

No, but... [Listening, thoughtful.] I feel bad for them too though.

[He smiles, sadly, fingers gripping at the tea cup.]

Me too. I wonder...how they would live if they weren't controlled by the Earl. I wonder if I could play cards with Tyki. And maybe even play games with Road...innocent ones. It's hard to fight them. They're humans.

[He's not mentally willing to say these things...but he does anyway.]

Mana. He adopted me from the streets when I was a kid. He was a real father to me...he died when I was still young. And when the Earl came, he said he could bring Mana back...and...I just wanted my dad back, you know? I was stupid. I agreed to the contract, but it only brought Mana back as an akuma, a killing machine...and it needed a body. It...Mana tried to kill me...he scratched my eye and cursed it, and that's the scar I have...I...I just reacted. My arm invocated because there was Innocence in it. And it destroyed Mana. I didn't mean...I tried to stop...I-it..It happened fast.

He was already dead...but in a way I killed him.

[And he looks down into lukewarm tea, biting his tongue because he can't even look at Euphie now. He said he, he had to say it, she already knew . Even so. She knows more than he was ever willing to have her know...Dammit Noah...]

[Eyes open wide in sympathy more than surprise.] Allen... [She reaches out and takes his hand. Hers is colder than it should be, but she doesn't worry about that.] It's not your fault.

I'm sure Mana wouldn't want to hurt you. You saved him from doing that.

[His arms tense, and he tries to pull his hands back very slowly and slightly. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings, just...He doesn't have gloves on...]

I'm fine, Miss Euphie, but thank you. I'm sorry, but could we not talk about Mana? That is...very personal to me. I don't want to talk about that day. I prefer my memories of him be of the good father that he was...not an akuma.

[Nods] I keep bringing up painful memories for you. I'm sorry. [She withdraws her hand since it is making him tense rather than comforting him.]

I feel like I should tell you secrets about myself.

It's okay. You knew parts...you might as well have heard the entire stories. [He just hopes you don't judge him for it.]

That's unnecessary. You don't owe me anything.

[Isn't judging you. Actually just feels closer to you.]

[Thoughtful pause as she tries to work up the courage to say this to someone who doesn't already know or isn't going through the same thing. And in person too. Just when she thinks she'll just change the topic and move on, she forces the words out.]

[She looks down at her tea, not sure how she feels about that reaction.]

[He doesn't want to know because he doesn't want to acknowledge what Euphie knows about him.]

[Just a little...confused and, yes, hurt here. Is he offended that she told him or that she hadn't told him sooner or just that she was? Or maybe it was all her questions. She didn't mean to push him. She just wanted to warn him that Tyki was saying those things really. ...And she let her curiosity get the better of her too.

Finally, she nods and stands up.] Thank you for the tea, Allen.
