[character]: Euphemia li Britannia
[character history / background]:
Euphemia is the pink-haired, sixteen year old, third princess of the Holy Britannian Empire and Sub-Viceroy of Area 11, formerly Japan.
When she is introduced she has just left school early to fulfill her new position in Area 11 and she decides to sneak out to see the place she will be ruling over. She immediately meets Suzaku Kururugi, an honorary Britannian who was not in particularly good standing as a member of the Britannian military. She grows fond of him and encourages him to go to school, hoping he will finish where she could not.
When it comes time later to take a knight, she makes the unpopular decision to choose him. Later, Suzaku resigns from that position, which among other pressures of state, takes a toll on Euphemia. It is not long after that she orders him to love her, and she promises to do the same. After that he resumes his rank as her knight.
Euphemia has one older sister, Cornelia, with whom she is very close. Beyond that she has an unknown—but likely immense—number of half-sisters and half-brothers including Lelouch and Nunnally whom she is especially fond of as children. It is even mentioned at one point that she and her sister, Nunnally, used to argue over which of them would one day marry Lelouch.
Unfortunately, both Lelouch and Nunnally were sent away to live in Japan after their mother died, and it was not long after that they faked their deaths. Euphemia believed them to be gone forever until meeting the terrorist, Zero, and eventually deducing he was actually her brother, Lelouch. Although Zero is an enemy to her kingdom and very directly to her sister, Cornelia, Euphemia can not see Lelouch as her enemy. She works at trying to reconnect with him in the few opportunities she has. Finally, after talking to Nunnally again, she settles on a plan she hopes will bring them all back together.
Euphemia announces the formation of the Special Administrative Zone of Japan (SAZ). It is met with skepticism from the elevens and disapproval from the Britannians although the project does have her older half-brother, Schneizel's approval. The plan infuriates Lelouch because it runs counter to his plans as Zero. However, she is able to convince him to join with her instead of standing against her.
He reveals to her that he has an ability known as geass in which he can compel a person to do anything he tells them to do. As an example, he tells her if he said she had to kill all the Japanese she would do it no matter how much she didn't want to do so. Tragically, it is at this moment that Lelouch's geass intensifies beyond his control and explanation turns to command. She is the first person seen resisting her geass, but she isn't able to overcome it, and soon she is very politely asking all the Japanese who have come to witness the opening of the SAZ to kill themselves. She orders the military to kill them as well and takes a gun to begin firing into the crowd. A massacre begins and in the ensuing chaos Lelouch, as Zero, goes to Euphemia and shoots her to prevent her from killing any more people.
Suzaku rushes her to a medical facility and they spend her last minutes together. The geass tries to take hold because he is Japanese, but she manages to fight it off. She can't remember the massacre she started, and he tells her the SAZ was a success. Knowing her end is near, she tells him to stay in school and how glad she is that everyone is happy.
[character abilities]:
She has no super human abilities or even stand out skills beyond her nurturing personality, ability to trust and forgive, and possibly the power to speak to cats. Of course this mostly amounts to her meowing at them, but she assures us communication is occurring! She is capable of operating a knightmare frame and speaking in public. She has also demonstrated a capacity for firing powerful weapons, showing she is probably a bit physically stronger than she looks. She received a top-notch education as a princess. However, she was unable to complete school before assuming the role of sub-viceroy.
[character personality]:
Euphemia, or Euphie as she is called by those closer to her, doesn't see the glass as half full or half empty. Instead, there is just enough in the glass to drink without accidentally spilling any if she was carrying it around.
But as rosy as her disposition can be, she knows the world isn't all roses. It's not even close. She is aware that she isn't as strong as her sister, Cornelia, or as smart as her brother, Lelouch, but she still tries her best to protect the ones she loves any way she can. She is not jealous of her siblings' accomplishments and success. She is happy for them even if their path is not her own. She strives to be better and wishes she could live up to the standard they've set even if she is intent on reaching her own goals of peace and happiness rather than domination and power.
She is loyal, optimistic, and kind. She can be timid and unsure of herself in complicated matters that don't cleanly fit in with her ideals like politics or battle, but she will also stand up for her beliefs, proving her to have that same stubborn strong will that seems to run in the Britannian royal family. Euphie can also be extremely impulsive. She follows her heart wherever it might lead and regardless of whomever might try to discourage her.
She cares about all people, but she cares about the people in her life most of all. Ultimately, they are the ones who motivate her actions even more than the greater good.
Euphie is rarely alone, but she is a lonely girl. Most of her loved ones are so dedicated to duty and work and achieving his or her goals that they can spare little personal time for her. The other people she sees are advisors, soldiers, and knights who are there to guide or protect her. This just gives her all the more incentive to reach out to people and make connections whenever she can. She is never without hope and the willingness to go after what she wants.
Her happiest times were as a child before Lelouch and Nunnally had to leave when her family was whole and together. And now, as the third princess and sub-viceroy, there are still plenty of times when she will show her childish, fun-loving side.

Suzaku?
[She looks around her, not recognizing anything.]
Cornelia?
[Where was she before this? There was a bed and Suzaku was there. He was holding her hand and…had they been crying? It all felt blurry in her mind. She could make out the big shapes, but not the details.]
Zero?
Hello, is anyone there? [She continues speaking into the communicator. It isn't exactly the kind she is familiar with, but she just wants someone—anyone—to answer her.]
I think I'm lost. I need to get back to… [Where?] Does anyone know where I am?
[third person / log sample]:
She took a deep breath. She could feel the air rushing in and filling her lungs. She could hear the soft sound as she exhaled once more. She could see the slight rise and fall of her chest as she did so. She could still take a breath, but she wasn't breathing any more. It was like a habit—and an especially hard one to break—but if she concentrated she could just stop. Her lungs wouldn't burn and ache, struggling to breathe again. Her head wouldn't swim. She wouldn't pass out. She wouldn't die, because…
Because.
She hadn't been hungry since she arrived. Again, she could still perform the act. She could taste and chew and presumably digest, although she didn't want to think about all the details there. But she didn't need food. Without it she didn't grow hungry or light-headed or weak.
She knew these things, but she pushed them to the back of her mind to be explored later if at all. The knowledge could sit neatly next to her memories—the ones that looked so faded and fuzzy in the day. The ones that would push their way forward when someone would mention Japan. But at night they were so much more than just flashes of unbelievable memory. They were in full color and surround sound. They danced through her mind splashed with crimson and punctuated by the sounds of artillery and screaming.
Her body would shoot up from bed, shaking violently, and her skin would feel even colder than it had since she arrived. She'd pant hard and unnecessarily. There was that habit again.
But she wasn't thinking about any of that right now. Those things were tucked away, just under the surface. It was a beautiful day, and there were lots of things to focus on in the city. There were so many new people to meet, and they were all so colorful and different. She wanted to enjoy the day and make herself useful. After all, night would come all too soon.
[additional third person / log sample]:
She surveyed the items on the table—grape jelly, bread, and peanut butter—creamy, not crunchy. It wasn't very fancy. It wasn't even something she was served as a child living in luxury as one of several princesses. She'd only learned about it after coming to the City. But the picnic had been her idea and she was set on contributing something even if she'd never really learned to cook or sew or clean or any of the other many skill sets that would have been useful living a life no longer associated with royalty.
It was almost funny. As a princess she'd been lacking in the hard edge many of her siblings possessed that made them decisive and strong. Public speaking had always made her nervous and not just because she was getting up in front of a crowd of people who may or may not have been receptive to her ideas, but because she was never sure what ideas she should express. The life she wanted was so far removed from the one she had that they bore little in common at times. It wasn't until the Special Administrative Zone that she had known—really known—what she wanted and how to achieve it.
And of course, it had failed beyond miserably. There were no words for that day. Nothing could describe or atone for it. But that day was now long ago and today was a time of bringing people together and lifting spirits. With one difficult curse after another falling upon her friends and family in the City she wanted to do something fun and relaxing where people could just enjoy each other's company. After all, she would never have gotten so close to her knight, Suzaku, if it hadn't been for that day they spent together. They had only just met and she had greeted him with lies and omissions, but by the end of their time together she felt like she had a real friend—maybe her first that wasn't a relation. She could see the goodness in him, but also the insecurity. It made her feel less alone.
That was part of what she liked about this place. There were so many different kinds of people coming to rely on each other and developing unlikely friendships like the ones she had.
That thought made her smile as she spooned some of the jelly out and drew smiley faces with it on the bread. It didn't bother her in the slightest that it wouldn't be seen. She was sure it would be a happier sandwich this way. Maybe she could only do small things like this for the people she cared about, but then that was exactly what she would do. And she'd never stop trying.
